Los Cristianos Tenerife

Los Cristianos Tenerife Church SquareLos Cristianos started life as a small fishing village centred around a small natural inlet just 5 minutes walk from Paloma Beach. The natural harbour expanded the fishing industry and during the 1970's a modern harbour and sea-port was built and Los Cristianos became an important port and market town in the south of Tenerife. Tourism had also begun to make an impact in Los Cristianos, with several developments of holiday apartments and hotels springing up, but it wasn't until the opening of the new International Airport in the south of Tenerife that tourism really became the core industry in Los Cristianos.

25 years later and Los Cristianos is a mixture of old and new, the harbour remains and it is still an important fishing port, however the harbour now offers several ferry services to the neighbouring islands of La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma, not to mention an array of boat trips and dolphin safaris which draw hundreds of visitors everyday.

Los Cristianos town centre is now a thriving shopping centre, with a range of local and duty free shops along several pedestrianised precincts which branch off from the church square. A sea front promenade stretches from one end of the town and beyond into the neighbouring town of Playa de Las Americas, the promenade is lined with bars and restaurants offering a wide range of local and international cuisine.

Los Cristianos - Beaches

Los Cristianos Tenerife - Playa las VistasOne of the greatest attractions of Los Cristianos is its two sandy beaches, the main beach Playa de Los Cristianos is protected by the harbour and enjoys gentle waters in the ambient surroundings of the fishing fleet. The beach is cleaned daily and is also wheelchair friendly. Sun beds and parasols are available as well as a range of water sport activities including, sailing, pedaloes and jet skis. Facilities include showers and toilets, plus a range of nearby bars and restaurants

Alternatively there is also the Blue Flag winning Playa de Las Vistas. Located on the other side of the harbour wall and protected by man-made breakwaters Las Vistas beach is almost a mile long stretching across the bay. Like Playa de Los Cristianos there are a range of water sport activities available, and facilities include showers, changing rooms, and toilets plus a range of bars and restaurants.

Los Cristianos boast a range of holiday accommodation, including self catering apartments and hotels. The hotels are almost exclusively booked by tour operators and include the likes of the Arona Gran Hotel and the H10 Hotel Princesa Dacil, there is more choice and flexibility with self catering apartments which are available for holiday rentals throughout the year, many like Paloma Beach can be booked directly with the resort management.

The future of Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos can look-forward to a bright future, the town is highly popular with residents and tourists and demand for Tenerife holiday accommodation and new property is growing, though nowadays developers are forced to move towards the outskirts of the town where there is cheaper land. Los Cristianos has clearly established itself as the cultural and commercial capital of the South of Tenerife and will no doubt continue to remain popular for years to come.
